About the Recipe

This dessert is one of Maria's favorites. We'll sometimes cook it in a dutch oven when camping. Much of the work can be done ahead of time.

Ingredients

Base

10 cups apples, peeled, cored, and sliced into wedges.

1 cup white sugar

1 Tbsp flour

1 rounded tsp ground cinnamon

½ cup water

Topping

1 cup quick-cooking oats

1 cup flour

1 cup packed brown sugar

1 rounded tsp ground cinnamon

¼ tsp baking powder

¼ tsp baking soda

½ cup butter, melted

Preparation

Preheat oven to 350° F (175° C).

Place the sliced apples in a 9" x 13" pan. Mix dry base ingredients together, and sprinkle over apple slices. Pour water evenly over all.

Combine the topping ingredients together. Crumble evenly over the apple mixture.

Bake at 350° F (175° C) for about 45 minutes.

For Camping

Modified for cooking in a dutch oven.

Before Trip

Before leaving, mix dry base ingredients in a bag, and topping ingredients (except butter) in another bag.

Cooking

Start a fire in the fire pit.

Place sliced apples in dutch oven. Sprinkle base ingredients bag over apple slices, and pour water evenly over all.

Cut together butter and topping ingredients in bag. Crumble evenly over the apple mixture.

Let fire cook down to coals, and suspend dutch oven over coals or rest on coals. Put a moderate amount of coals on the top. Let cook until oven is steaming, and topping has browned a bit.
