Sara's Rolls

About the Recipe

Leif's grandmother would make these rolls for most dinners.


½ cup shortening

¼ cup sugar

1 tsp salt

1 egg, beaten

1 cup boiling water

1 yeast cake or packet

4 cups flour


Cream together shortening and sugar. Add boiling water and salt. Dissolve yeast in lukewarm water (about 3 Tbsp is enough). When first mixture is lukewarm, add dissolved yeast and egg. Stir well, add flour one cup at a time mixing well to make a soft dough. Store in refrigerator (can keep up to a week).

Shape into rolls. Place on cookie sheet. Cover with tea towel and allow to rise (2 to 3 hours).

Bake ten minutes in 425° F/220° C oven.
